BROAB 2019

My First BROAB TRIP

by: Joe Dubois

I’ve lived in Colorado and been an avid mountain biker for years, yet never made it out to one of the most spectacular areas for mountain biking in the country, Moab, only a short day’s drive from the Denver area.   My friends that live in the mountains head over to Moab often to ride and had finally twisted my arm to join them for a few days in the desert.  Good friends, good riding and maybe a few good beers as well?  It was a tough sell.

First stop, Breckenridge to load up the truck and meet up with the rest of the crew.  We were also testing out RMU’s brand new Tailgate Locker, the solution for your truck and your bikes.  We got everything all loaded up and started making our way towards the desert.  After a quick stop in Fruita for a quick bite and a few last minute bike essentials, we were on to Utah and our campsite...that turned out to be already occupied.  I quickly realized that one of the many great things about Moab is that there are tons of awesome campsites.  So, after a little exploring, we found ourselves a nice spot overlooking Joe’s Canyon. We got all set up, unpacked and tried one of those good beers I was promised as we tossed around some ideas of where to ride the next day.

We woke up to some less than perfect weather, but luckily it passed quick and we were able to still get a fairly early start to the day.  We headed toward Navajo Rocks, a single track trail with nearly 6000 feet in elevation gain.  A couple challenging sections and several different terrain features made for a great ride.  The next day we rode two different trails: Captain Ahab and Jacksons.  Captain Ahab, a single track trail with great flow, some fast and exciting sections and amazing views to boot. Finally, we rode a trail called Jacksons.  One of the guys on the trip promised 'a fun ride, great flow.' Agree to disagree.  A little warning for a guy not to keen on heights would have been nice.

After two fantastic days in the desert, unfortunately real life called and it was time to head back home.  The desert always seems to recharge people and it was no different with me.  It was an amazing first mountain bike trip to Moab and one I hope to repeat many times.
