Our Dedication to Quality and Sustainable Manufacturing

Our Dedication to Quality and Sustainable Manufacturing

For RMU, Uncompromised Quality isn't just a thought it is what drives us. In 2017 we partnered with Åre Skidfabrik located in Åre, Sweden. Not only is Åre Skidfabrik Scandinavia's only alpine ski factory but it is founder owned and operated by skiers just like RMU. Together we manufacturer the highest quality skis with a focus on sustainability. This partnership has secured our goals for the future of RMU.

“If you look at the big picture at Åre, Skidfabrik, I do not think you can manufacture skis in a more sustainable way than we do today” says Carl Geijer, CEO and co-owner of Åre Skidfabrik, and continues “This is something we are very proud of and also something I believe our customers value highly.”

Åre Skidfabrik has been manufacturing skis and snowboards since 1981. They have been through many changes through the years, from elementary snowboard manufacturing to our boutique ski manufacturing partner they are today. With recent large investments in a top of the line Montana tuning robot, geothermal heating and a highly efficient re uptake heating system using energy from the ski presses, Åre Skidfabrik is one of the most modern and sustainable ski production facilities in the world. Especially since all of their baseline power comes from 100 % renewable energy from local hydro power stations delivered by Jämtkraft.

“It’s absolutely fantastic” says Patrik Söderlund, who is the factory manager and co-founder discussing the re-uptake heating system, and continues, “With the excess heat from these two machines, we can heat up our entire factory building during working hours without adding any extra energy.”

Through the factories long tenure, investments into its ability to create the highest quality skis has come in very fortunate ways.  During a time of foreign investment at the factory, a 3 axis milling machine was added to the production line. This machine has the ability to create highly accurate tooling which ensures precise pressure and bonding for our skis.  Through this time 2 of the most finely made ski presses were added into production. They allow for supreme accuracy in pressure across the entire press surface by adding a pneumatic table able to fine tune rocker and camber to an incredibly low tolerance.  The best part about this time in Åre is that the founders were able to purchase back the factory and own these incredible upgrades at the boutique manufacturing level at cents on the dollar.

"We scoured the world for a factory partner that had the same ideals and dedication to durability, quality and sustainability." Says COO of RMU Chris Glynn, and continues."Their dedication to our mutual manufacturing, as truly passionate skiers, has reinvigorated RMU and pushed us to create the best line of skis we ever thought we could.  RMU all started because of a love for skiing and working with like minded skiers has been an amazing journey."

MATERIALS

Skis that last. For many years to come.

We believe in making skis that can stand the real world abuse of the mountains and last for many winters to come. We also believe that a pair of skis should be easy to tune and repair, and not be thrown away just because you skied into a rock and got a coreshot. That’s why we use thick ABS sidewalls, alongside highly durable, all black, graphite race bases and the thickest steel edges in the ski industry.

Yes, there is only wood in the core of our skis

We are always asked if there is wood in our skis and yes, we only use wood in the core of our skis for most lively playful performance.  The poplar and poplar paulownia wood cores are sourced just north of the factory.  They are cut using an in house 5 axis CNC that also cuts out a recess for our beech mounting plate increasing our screw retention immensely.

Pre-Preg fiberglass and carbon

We use fiberglass and carbon fiber sheets that come pre-impregnated with epoxy, eliminating the need for our crew to handle liquid epoxy. Pre-Preg also distributes the epoxy perfectly in the skis, making them stronger and lighter. Vlies, a felt like material, are used to increase bonding between unlike materials maximizing our tolerance for delamination.

Recycled materials in our skis

Steel edges

We use high-quality, extra thick, steel edges with 26% recycled content.

Top sheets

Our durable topsheets are made out of 50% bio-based materials.

Bio-Wax

Our skis are treated with Nordic Swan eco-certified, 100% biodegradable, wax from Holmenkol.
